Characteristics: Isoetes duriei is a small plant made up of rosette of linear leaves along the ground; the leaves are rigid and slightly curved spirally. The leaves are found on a very short stem that remains underground. The sporangii can be found at the base of the leaves; the female spores are large - nearly 0.5 mm - and can be seen by the naked eye. Isoetes live in very moist soils which can be temporarilly stagnant, generally along pond-sides. To determine the species level it is essential to see the ornamentation of the spores (a pocket magnifying glass will suffice).
