Differs from Juncus maritimus by its compact inflorescence and capsular fruits, the latter clearly much larger than its sepals. (Be careful with subsp. tommasinii, it has small capsules!) Additionally, Juncus maritimus is rhizotomous, usually growing in lawns and its inflorescence is very lax.
