Habitat: Near non-saline wetlands (intermittent watercourses, streams, artesian wells, ditches).
Characteristics: A fresh water herb found in torrents (dry river beds), it has the rhizomes in the sediment, whereas the stems and leaves come out of the water. The leaves are very long and lanceolate with the margin covered in small teeth. The base of the leaf forms, like all the Polygonum, an ochrea, which is a kind of pod that surrounds the stem with a membranous texture, in this case brown. The flowers are small, pink and grouped in inflorescences at the top of the stems, usually hanging down a little. It flowers in summer and autumn.
