Characteristics: One more of the Compositae species with yellow flowers living in clearings in garrigues (Mediterranean woodland); it has a rosette of greatly divided leaves at the base, and the flowers are very small. The easiest feature to distinguish it from other Compositae is the fruits (achenes) which are rigid and open out to form a kind of star. The subspecies edulis only has 5 achenes whereas the typical subspecies has from 6 to 8 and they are larger (up to 2 cm). It flowers at the end of spring.
