The leaves are flat and all grow from the base of the plant. The stem, only one, has a compact inflorescence at the top which has bracts at its base. It lives in moist but not stagnant soils with non-carbonated substrates. Juncus bufonius is also annual, but it can be distinguished because it has a much laxer inflorescence with small tufts of flowers.
