Characteristics: This rush has leaves on top of the stem, these leaves are fairly thick and when run through the fingers a series of articulations can be distinctly noted, and the leaf is also soft to the touch. Forms dense lawns generally with the rhizomes submerged in the water. The inflorescence is fairly broad with embranchments that stem off in all directions. It is very similar to Juncus subnodulosus, but is recognized by its floral characteristics and that the latter species has longitudinal septae while Juncus articulatus does not. Flowers at the end of spring and during the summer.
