Pulicaria sicula (L.) Moris
Family: COMPOSITAE (ASTERACEAE)
Genus: Pulicaria
Province distribution: Balearic Islands.
Distribution in the islands: Mallorca. Menorca. Formentera.
IUCN Category: Least concern
Life-forms: Terophyte.
Habitats: Non-saline wetlands (intermittent watercourses, streams, artesian wells, ditches). Humid soils sometimes inundated.
Characteristics: A herb living along the edges of the zones that form ponds; it is very branched, with small leaves that are usually curled up. The capitula are also small, less than one centimetre in diametre. It is often reddish. It can be mistaken for Dittrichia graveolens which has similar leaves and capitula; this species, however, lives along path-sides and wasteland, so it has a very different ecology from Pulicaria sicula, on the other hand all the flowers of the capitula have a ligule whereas in Pulicaria they are tubulous. It flowers at the end of summer and in autumn.
