Habitats: Non-saline wetlands (intermittent watercourses, streams, artesian wells, ditches).

Characteristics: Temporarily or permanently flooded soils: pools, ponds, small lakes riverbanks, wet grasslands, etc. A rhizomatous plant that usually generates large populations. The stems are ± thin, 1-4 mm in diameter. The spikelets are usually small (de 5-30 mm), and straw or dark brown in colour. Differs from E. quinqueflora as it superior sheath is transversely truncated and the nutlets are not longitudinally striated.
