Characteristics: A caespitose plant with a discontinuous inflorescence made up of more than to spikes per stem (3-10), in the form of a spike, all of them similar in appearance, save for one spike with male flowers at the apex. The vesicle that surrounds the seed (utricle) has a convex face while the other is flat, with a beak longer than the glume. Leaves are scratchy to the touch.
