Characteristics: An erect herbaceous plant that can grow up to 80 cm. in height. Leaves are semi cylindrical and fleshy with a dilated base. Flowers are small and not very showy, grouped in axial clusters. The perianth is formed by spiny leaves and is slightly funnelled at the base. Can be told apart from S.kali as this later species has rigid leaves that finish in a spine.
