Habitats: Non-saline wetlands (intermittent watercourses, streams, artesian wells, ditches). Torrents and humid soils.

Characteristics: A very robust plant with square green stems. Differs from the rest of the Scrophularia species as its leaf lamina is made up of an oval or lanceolate segment greater than one cm. in width, and 1-2 pairs of much smaller basal segments. This subspecies differs from the type subspecies as its stem is tightly winged stem and by the basal segments, which can slightly underpass the main leaf segment.
