Pinus canariensis Sweet ex Spreng.
Family: PINACEAE
Genus: Pinus
Spanish common name: Pino canario.
General distribution (Phytogeography): Macaronesian
IUCN Category: Least concern
Life-forms: Macrophanerophyte.
Habitats: Garden plants. Cultivated specie. Gardens.
Characteristics: This pine is endemic to the Canary islands, we can often find it in gardens in the Balearics, we have never seen it naturalized or subspontaneous. It is very easily recognisable because the leaves are grouped in threes, instead of being in pairs like in the Mediterranean pines, moreover the leaves are very long and hang down. These features make the image of this tree very different to the native pines in the Balearics, for this particular reason they are grown in gardens, for their exotic, curious appearence.
