Genus: Senecio

Province distribution: Balearic Islands.

Distribution in the islands: Mallorca. Ibiza. Formentera.

IUCN Category: LCLeast concern

Life-forms: Terophyte.

Characteristics: A plant of the Compositae or sunflower family that lives along the littoral zones, above all on sandy soils. It is very rare in Mallorca (Punta de N´Amer). Very characteristic are the yellow capitols, with green bracts, the outer ones smaller and with black spots. Leaves are scantly dentate until the lobes and slightly fleshy. This species has many subspecies in the Western Mediterranean (i.e. subsp. crassifolius (Willd.) Ball, cited for Balears) and a serious study of these populations in the Balears needs to be made.
