Cephalaria squamiflora (Sieber) Greuter subsp. balearica (Willk.) Greuter

Family : DIPSACACEAE

Genus : Cephalaria

    Province distribution : Balearic Islands.

Distribution in the islands : Mallorca.

    General distribution : Mediterranean (Balearic)

    Endemisms : Balearic Islands

    Flowering time : July. August.

    Life-forms : Chameophyte.

    Habitat : Rock creviceses.

    IUCN Category : Poco preocupante

Characteristics : A shrub that leaves in the rocky crevices of rock formations of the Mallorquin Serra de Tramuntana. Forms long branches covered with leaves more or less ovate, shiny and with a large petiole. The inflorescence is capitula of white flowers, reminiscent of the composites, as the basal bracts resemble those of this family. Can be found in the same habitat as many other Balearic endemics, which can create some confusion when the moment arrives to identify them, especially if they are not in flower, as their remote locations makes it hard to observe them close up. In Eivissa there is also the subspecies mediterrània, which is also found in other islands of the Mediterranean. Flowers during the summer.

    Status : Endèmica (Microareal).
