The Orquidea is one of the most appraised of the plant families by botanists and nature lovers due to their diversity of forms and colours. At the same time beautiful, they are also are rare and endangered and for this reason they are protected by Decree 24/92 and are included within the Balearic Catalogue of Endangered Plant Species, and so we thought that they should have a special section.

The list that we have put together gathers the information published about the Balearic Island members of this family. Some of the species cited are from older citations and have not been found again. One must take into account however that there is not a complete agreement as to some taxons due to the difficulty in their classification and the criteria used by some authors. We have followed the criteria of the following authors: ALOMAR, G. Petita guia de les Orquídies de les Balears. 1994; DELFORGE, P. Guía de las Orquídeas de España y Europa.1994. (Spanish edition, 2002) and the nomenclature of the later author.
