Trees on the campus of the Universitat de les Illes Balears
The University Campus has a valuable heritage in tree specimens. Some were already there before the University was built while others have been planted in recent years in the gardens, parking lots and roads. The whole collection of trees has an aesthetic interest, but they are also important as a teaching resource, since they provide examples of families, leaf shapes, flowers and fruits from countries which are quite different from our Mediterranean islands. Over 80 different species have been catalogued, images of which can be found in the same format as the Herbari Virtual, but with specific information data sheet for this group of species. Each of the data sheets can be accessed by the scientific name or by the popular name. In the near future we expect to be able to incorporate a map with the distribution of these trees on the Campus. This project has been supported by the Vice Chancellor's Office for Infrastructures and the Environment of the University.
