Characteristics: This subspecies of Daucus carota lives in coastal areas, generally on rocky coasts. Like all the other subspecies which live along the coast it has wider bracts than the subspecies found in arable land, and the umbel does not close up when the fruits have been formed. The fruits have thorns with a wide base, often joined in a type of crest; on the other hand the subsp. commutatus has fruits with slim thorns. For the genus Daucus we have followed the nomenclature of J. Pujadas (2002) An. Jard. Bot. Madrid, 59 (2); 368-375.
