Description: A deciduous tree that grow to over 20 m in height, with a wide crown; the trunk is thick and silvery grey. Composite, odd-pinnate leaves with 5 to 9 entire foliols, ovate, clear green in colour and very glabrous or smooth leaves that are very fragrant when crushed. Fruit are large and globular, with the external husk is green and fleshy, but upon drying this coat turns black and decomposes, exposing the wrinkly walnut shell. The male flowers are in the form o hanging catkins that are borne upon last year?s branches. The female flowers are in groups of one to four, on this year?s branches.
Observations: The wood is used for fine furniture and for rifle and shotgun stocks.
