Characteristics: The red poppy is the most common of this genus in the isles, it can be found covering entire fields with the scarlet red cape of its flowers. It also flowers much later than the rest of the genus. To tell it apart from Papaver dubium, one has to pay attention to the straight, rigid hairs of the stem, Papaver dubium has its hairs pressed close to the stem, additionally, the colour of the flowers of Papaver rhoeas are also much more intense, usually with a black spot at the base of the petal.
