Characteristics: The spikes of Lolium are always long and thin, with spikelets very stuck to the stem, and the glume (that is the basal bract) protecting most of the spikelet. Lolium rigidum has this name because the rachis of the spike is quite rigid; it is an annual cycle species, whereas Lolium perenne, which is a similar species, is perennial and caespitose, and has a flexible rather than rigid rachis.
