Description: A small deciduous tree that can reach 10 m in height, the trunk is very straight and the bark is very chiselled. Alternate leaves, only slightly petiolated, with spiny stipules. The lamina is oblong-oval to oval lanceolate, 2-6 cm in length with a dentate margin. Small greenish flowers situated in groups of 2-5. The fruit is the jujube, an ovoid drupe in the form of an olive, red in colour when mature.
Observations: In China the leaves are used to feed silkworms.
