Characteristics: This Umbelliferae is usually found in humid areas, above canal and torrent banks. The leaves are fairly divided as is for the majority of the members of the species of this family. The umbel.les have white not very large flowers upon a fairly large peduncle. The fruits have needle-like spiny emergences or turbercles at the base. In less humid areas,it can be found the the purple/lavander subspecies with fewer hairs, these ellow in colour. Torilis japonica differs from Torilis arvensis, as it has umbelles with bracts at the base. Flowers at the end of spring until the end of summer.
