Description: Tree 20 to 25 m in height, bark is dark grey or almost black, with notable, straight branches with thick, pubescent branchlets. Leaves alternate, ovate or transovate, 8-17 cm in length, pubescent and rough to the touch on the obverse with the apex finished in a fine point, asymmetric at the base. Margin is doubly serrate, with spaced teeth. The obverse is a dull green and the reverse is more pallid than the obverse. The lamina has 14-20 pairs marked parallel veins. Flowers are with dense racemes without pedicels.

Observations: The wood of the Scotch elm is strong, elastic and dense, and used in naval construction.
