Micromeria graeca (L.) Benth.

Family: LABIATAE (LAMIACEAE)

Genus: Micromeria

Sinònims: Satureja graeca L.

Province distribution: Balearic Islands.

Distribution in the islands: Ibiza. Formentera.

General distribution (Phytogeography): South Mediterranean

IUCN Category: LCLeast concern

Flowering time: JanFebMarAprMayJunJulAugSepOctNovDec

Life-forms: Chameophyte.

Habitats: Cultivated fields, path and road sides, disturbed zones. Pine wood and shrubland with rosemary and thyme garigue. Dry soils.

Characteristics: Not a very large shrub, with erect branches, and pubescent, which are covered in very narrow lanceolate leaves at the top of the plant. At the top of the stems the violet flowers are formed, appearing in groups in the axil of the leaves. The distinction of the different species of Micromeria is not easy and we will frequently find specimens difficult to classify in one or another species; therefore it is necessary to confirm the decisions with keys. Micromeria nervosa is the closest one (treated as subspecies in some works) we will distinguish it because this has its flowers covered with a very characteristic long, dense pilosity. It lives in dry, hot places in the Pitiüses (Eivissa and Formentera). It flowers almost in summer.
