Habitats: Litoral marshes and riparian. Gypsicolous shrubland. Subdesertic xerosteppes, espartaes. Open low scrub on marly hills (sometimes slightly gypsiferous or saline), in warm and very dry areas near the coast.
Characteristics: Small shrub up to 50 cm tall, bluish-gray in color. Stems fleshy, very short and branched, fragile. Leaves reduced to a scale surrounding the stem, giving it an articulated appearance. Flowers opposite, grouped at the ends of the branchlets, inconspicuous. Winged tepals. Fruit slightly fleshy, with a wing that gives the plant a showy, colored appearance (metallic reddish or cream).
