Daucus carota L. subsp. majoricus A. Pujadas
Family: UMBELLIFERAE (APIACEAE)
Genus: Daucus
Catalan common name: Pastanaga marina.
Province distribution: Balearic Islands.
Distribution in the islands: Mallorca. Cabrera.
General distribution (Phytogeography): Mediterranean (Balearic)
IUCN Category: Least concern
Life-forms: Hemicryptophyte.
Habitats: Beaches and dunes, sandy soils. Rocky coastlines. Coastal cliffs and beaches.
Characteristics: On the western coast of Mallorca and on the island of Cabrera, near the sea, we will find this endemic subspecies of Daucus carota, which can be distinguished from the other subspecies living in these areas, because the umbel opens completely forming a sort of ball. What is more, the leaves have a crassulescent consistency and are pale green, unlike the subspecies that are found in fields and paths. The umbel does not close up on itself when producing fruit. For the genus Daucus we have followed the nomenclature of J. Pujadas (2002) An. Jard. Bot. Madrid, 59 (2); 368-375.
