Characteristics: Graminea with large awned spikelets that hang from the branches of the inflorescence. The entrie plant may take on a reddish colour. Differs from the characteristic subspecies by its dense and erect panicle, instead of lax and hanging, and the number of branches of the lower panicle are fewer (1 - 3) and shorter, spiklete size is also reduced.
