Characteristics: A Graminae, that is tall and erect, with a large and loose panicle. Differentiates from A. barbata, in that this latter species is less robust, with glumullas terminating in two setae, whilst those of Avena sterilis are bifid. The characteristic subspecies can be recognized by its larger spikelets (33-48 mm) while the spikelets of subsp. ludoviciana are 19-29 mm. in length.
