Habitats: Beaches and dunes, sandy soils. Dry, sunny herbaceous communities on disturbed sandy soils.
Characteristics: Perennial, rhizomatous, monoecious herb. Stems 30-80 cm, much branched from the base. Leaves 10 × 5 cm, with petiole shorter than the blade, ovate-lanceolate (sometimes sagittate), acute, papillose, with irregularly sinuous, dentate, and papillose margin. Inflorescence simple, with unisexual flowers bearing free outer parts. Fruit with rounded valves, entire margin, and cordate base, turning reddish when ripe.
