Habitats: River forests. Non-saline wetlands (intermittent watercourses, streams, artesian wells, ditches). Reedbeds and giant reed stands, on waterlogged or very moist soils, near river channels or at the edges of lagoons and coastal marshes.
Characteristics: Rhizomatous herb, 5-30 cm. Stems ascending, quadrangular in section, almost devoid of hairs. Leaves 2-5 cm, opposite and lanceolate, with regularly dentate margins (teeth rounded), more or less cordate at the base; upper surface with rough hairs, underside with soft hairs (tomentose or glabrescent). Flowers in pairs in the leaf axils, with corolla 1-2 cm, blue-violet (sometimes with pink spots), hairy on the outer surface.
