Habitats: Cultivated fields, path and road sides, disturbed zones. Dry to cool areas, where it forms part of open perennial grasslands, stony slopes, and the edges of cultivated fields and paths.
Characteristics: Perennial plant, slightly lignified at the base. Upright growth habit with stems up to 55 cm tall. Leaves wihthout petiole, generally opposite, with the upper ones arranged in groups of 3 (rarely 4 or 5). Flowers have a long pedicel (around 40 mm); the corolla consists of five blue, basally fused petals, 15–25 mm in diameter.
Observations: Recent studies suggest that what has traditionally been referred to as A. monelli should be split into two distinct taxa: A. monelli, with blue-petaled flowers, and A. collina, which occurs along the coasts of Castellón and Tarragona and bears reddish-petaled flowers.
