Habitats: Non-saline wetlands (intermittent watercourses, streams, artesian wells, ditches).

Characteristics: Very wet areas: rushlands, springs, stream banks, moist grasslands, marshes, etc. A densely caespitose plant. The leaves are flat, non convolute and wide (up to 5 mm); against the light some translucid, longitudinal bands can be seen. The panicle is large (up to 50 cm in length) and lax. The spikelets are brownish or violet, some 4-6 mm. The inferior glumella is truncate and dentate, with an upright basal awn.
