Characteristics: A Graminae that can grow to a meter in height. Forms a shortened and ovate panicle with spikelets that can be violet in colour. Forms not very dense lawns. The type subspecies has an open and pyramidal panicle and a thinner and rounder rhizome (P. trivialis subsp. sylvicola has a thick rhizome with moliniform roots that remind one of a collar of pearls).
