Characteristics: A caespitose plant that lives in wetlands, often on saline soils. It has more than two spikes per stem, protected by a large axilliary leaf that is very characteristic. The male spikes are linear and the female spikes, upon fructification, are very dense and are formed by seeds that are individually closed inside of a vesicle with a very evident beak.
