Characteristics: A small erect plant, with linear, whorled leaves. Forms a compact spike for an inflorescence at the upper part of the stem. It is similar to Crucianella latifolia; this latter species is larger and has lanceolate leaves. Crucianella maritima is clearly a woody plant of the dunes. Other Rubiaceas rarely posses erect stems and do not form a compact flower inflorescence. Lives in terraphytic meadows. Flowers from May to June.
